I don't really know anything about horses or horse races, but the story of this particular horse race and the horse caught my attention.
Zenyatta is a female horse who won many races. No other female horse could compete with her. People started to say that she was so fast she could even outrun male horses. So the owner decided that for the last race of her career he would let her run in a big race against the boys - a race that has never been won by a female before.
Other horses could be nervous or restless before a race, not so Zenyatta. She was calm and enjoyed the attention of people. When the horses first came to walk through the people, she actually stopped a bit to pose. Later on (yet still before the race) she did her dance moves. People were so excited to see Zenyatta run against the boys. They came with huge cardboards for Zenyatta.
When the race started, Zenyatta was already behind. Throughout the race she was at the very end, not just by a little bit but with a huge distance. And then, right before the end, she took off. The jockey wanted to run her through the middle of the horses, but she knew she wouldn't be able to get through, so she ran outside around the other horses, and won!
It's pretty amazing. It was her last race and she won against the best of the male race horses. Here's the race:
When I saw my most favorite board game in Toys R Us today, I could not resist buying it. Three years ago this charming game turned 20. I remember I have been playing this game throughout my primary school years. And the nice thing about this game is that it's quick to understand, crosses all language barriers, appeals to all ages and is different every time you play it.
